COVID-19 FAQs for Prospective Students
The COVID-19 pandemic has altered routines and interrupted plans for many applicants and families. We anticipate you will have questions of how this impacts your application to BYU. We hope these will help answer your questions and alleviate any concerns you may have. Please send us a YMessage if you have questions not addressed in this FAQ.
Toggle ItemACT/SAT Test Scores
Is an ACT or SAT test required for BYU Admissions?
Most applicants are not required to submit a standardized test score to be considered for admission to BYU for spring 2021 through winter 2024. You may choose to submit a test score if you feel it would strengthen your application.
What if I choose not to have a score included in my application, will I be disadvantaged compared to someone who chose to have a score included?
If you choose not to have a score included as part of your application, you will not be disadvantaged when compared to applicants who choose to include a score. We review each application holistically when making admission decisions. Your admission decision will be based on the information you provide to BYU through the online admission application.
What if BYU already has a test score on file, but I do not want it to be used in my application?
Most applicants will not be required to submit an ACT or an SAT score as part of their application. If this applies to you, then you will have the opportunity to tell us whether or not to consider any test score we have already received. During the online application process, you will be asked if you want us to consider a standardized test score as we make our admission decision. If you have the option and opt to exclude either an ACT or an SAT from your application, we will not consider the test score even if we have received it.
What if I’m signed up to take a test in December? Can that score be used in my application?
You will be able to submit your application without an ACT or SAT test score by either the priority or final deadline. However, you will need to submit an official score by the date listed in the ACT/SAT deadline column if you would like it considered in your application evaluation.
Can I change my choice to use a test score or not after I have submitted my application?
You are able to withdraw, update information, and submit your application as many times as you would like until the final deadline. Please note if you withdraw your application after the priority deadline, you will lose your priority status. Applications withdrawn to make changes after the final deadline cannot be considered. However, if you opted for Admissions to use your ACT or SAT test score, the score must be received by the ACT/SAT deadline for consideration in your application. Please visit deadlines.byu.edu for more information.
How do I get my recommendations when we are in remote instruction?
You will not be disadvantaged for participating in remote instruction. You may select the teacher you would like to submit your recommendation form, provide their email address in the application, and the application will email them a recommendation form. When selecting a teacher, please make sure the criteria for a teacher recommender are met. See https://enrollment.byu.edu/admissions/recommendations for more information.
Toggle ItemTranscripts (High School and College)
What if my high school opted to give pass/fail grades during the COVID-19 pandemic, will I be penalized?
No, you will not be penalized. If you or your high school opted for pass/fail grades for the semester(s) or term(s) impacted by COVID-19, this will not have a negative impact on your admission application to BYU.
What if my college opted to give pass/fail grades during the COVID-19 pandemic, will I be penalized?
No, you will not be penalized. If you or your university or college opted for pass/fail grades for the semester(s) or term(s) impacted by COVID-19, this will not have a negative impact on your admission application to BYU. Toggle ItemSeminary Attendance
What if my seminary instruction moved to online or remote and my attendance was impacted?
We understand that your seminary attendance may be impacted for various reasons. You will have an opportunity to explain your seminary attendance in the online admission application.
How will scholarships be awarded without a standardized test score?
If you opt to include a test score for admission purposes, we will use that score as we award academic scholarships. We have confidence that with or without the score, we will have sufficient academic indicators to make meaningful scholarship decisions.
