COVID-19 Missionary FAQs

FAQs and details regarding missionary deferment updates

The COVID-19 pandemic has altered routines and interrupted plans, at least temporarily, including your missionary service. With recent adjustments made by the First Presidency and Quorum of the Twelve Apostles, you have received encouragement to counsel with your parents, priesthood leaders, and the Lord. As you do so, your immediate and future plans may change, which may determine when you enroll, or re-enroll, at Brigham Young University.
  • I WILL BE RELEASED NOW AND PLAN TO RETURN TO SERVING A MISSION IN THE FUTURE WITH MY ORIGINAL RELEASE DATE


    You should return to your mission deferment and update your new release date and select an available term to return to BYU. When you return to missionary service, you should complete a new mission deferment page and select "New Deferment" from the drop down.

  • I PLAN TO BEGIN ONLINE MTC TRAINING AND WILL THEN BEGIN SERVICE AS SOON AS CONDITIONS ALLOW WITH MY ORIGINAL RELEASE DATE


    Once you know when you will be released following your MTC training, you should return to your mission deferment and update your release date to the month and year when you will be released following your MTC training. You should then select an available term to return to BYU. When you return to missionary service, you should complete a new mission deferment by visiting the mission deferment page and selecting "New Deferment" from the drop down.

    I WILL PLAN TO DELAY THE START OF MY MISSION BUT WILL BEGIN SERVICE WITHIN 12-18 MONTHS WITH A NEW RELEASE DATE


    You should return to your mission deferment and check the box "I did not/will not enter the MTC." You can then obtain a new ecclesiastical endorsement. We may reach out to you with additional instructions based on your individual situation. Once you are able to enter the MTC, you should complete a new mission deferment by visiting the mission deferment page and selecting "New Deferment" from the drop down.

    I AM NO LONGER PLANNING TO SERVE A MISSION


    You should return to your mission deferment and check the box "I did not/will not enter the MTC." You should then obtain a new ecclesiastical endorsement. We may reach out to you with additional instructions based on your individual situation.

  • I HAVE BEEN RELEASED EARLIER THAN INDICATED ON MY MISSION DEFERMENT


    You should return to your mission deferment and update your new release date and select an available term to return to BYU.

    I HAVE TRIED TO SELECT A DIFFERENT TERM TO RETURN TO BYU, BUT I HAVE ALREADY REGISTERED FOR FUTURE CLASSES


    You should send us a YMessage with the term you would like to change to. We can then see what we can do to move you to the new term. Do not drop your classes.

    I FORGOT TO FILL OUT A MISSIONARY DEFERMENT BEFORE I LEFT ON MY MISSION


    You should send us a YMessage explaining your situation. Please include your mission name and your mission start and release dates.

    I RECEIVED AN ECCLESIASTICAL ENDORSEMENT, BUT I AM STILL UNABLE TO REGISTER


    It can take up to 24 hours from the completion of your endorsement to when you will be able to register. If it has been longer than 24 hours, you can send us a YMessage. The endorsement should be completed within the 9 month period prior to the start of the term for which you are returning.

    I SELECTED A NEW TERM TO ATTEND BYU, BUT I AM STILL UNABLE TO REGISTER

    It can take up to 24 hours from the completion of your endorsement to when you will be able to register. If it has been longer than 24 hours, you can send us a YMessage. The endorsement should be completed within the 9 month period prior the start of the term for which you are returning.

    I WANT TO LIVE ON CAMPUS

    It can take up to 24 hours after you complete your endorsement to be able to register and contract for housing. If it has been longer than 24 hours, you can send us a YMessage. The endorsement should be completed within the 9 month period prior the start of the term for which you are returning.
