If you are a dependent student and are required by the government to complete verification on your FAFSA, you will need to complete the Dependent Verification Form. The following instructions are for how you and your parent can complete the form.
Before your parent can sign the form, you must first complete the student portion of the form. If you are selected for verification, you can find the Dependent Verification Form at your My Financial Center.
Step 1: Log In
Log in to your own My Financial Center. Make sure that you log in with your BYU Net ID and password, as indicated below.
Step 2: Find the Task
After logging in to your My Financial Center, your incomplete tasks will appear on the right side of the screen. Our office recommends completing the Dependent Verification Form first as the other tasks could update based on the information provided in the form.
Step 3: Read Instructions
Once you click on the Dependent Verification Form link, you will get to a landing page that explains the upcoming process.
After proceeding to Dependent Verification, you will get the instructions screen.
Step 4: Complete Household Information
Read all instructions before adding members to your household. Send a YMessage to Financial Aid if you have questions about any of your household members.
Step 5: Complete Tax Information
Complete the questions about your income and tax information for the specified year. Your remaining tasks are based on your responses to these questions.
Step 6: Electronic Signature
Once you ensure that all information on the form is accurate, you are ready to sign it. E-signing the form will allow for faster processing; however, you do have the option to print the pages of the form and physically sign it, along with your parent. Make sure you have the proper BYU Net ID and password. As a reminder, the Net ID and password are the same as you used to log in to your My Financial Center.
You will receive a confirmation pop-up once you have successfully e-signed.
Now that you completed your portion of the form, your parent can complete their portion.
The parent must validate the information on the Dependent Verification Form in order for the student’s task to be complete. Parents need to review the form to make sure all information is accurate.
Step 1: Log In
The parent must log in to their own My Financial Center (not the student’s). This requires a BYU Net ID and password.
If the parent does not have a Net ID and password, they must create one in order to e-sign. The parent must include in their personal contact information page their:
Failure to include the above information means the parent will not be able to view the Dependent Verification Form.
Step 2: Find the Task
The task should appear on the right side of the My Financial Center.
Once the parent clicks on the link, they will be able to select that they want to complete the Dependent Verification Form.
Step 3: Review Information
After selecting the correct form, the parent can review all of the information input by the student. If the information is inaccurate, the student must make any corrections in their portion and resubmit the form for the parent to review.
Step 4: Electronic Signature
Once the parent determines that all the information on the form is accurate, they can sign with their BYU Net ID and password. As a reminder, that is the same Net ID and password used to log in to the My Financial Center.
There are a few common issues that you may run into while signing the form. These issues and how to solve them are listed below.
|Issue/Error||How to Troubleshoot|
|No link showing in parent’s My Financial Center||
Make sure you submitted your portion of the worksheet.
Make sure your parent’s Social Security Number, date of birth, and name are listed correctly in their BYU account.
|“Invalid Signature” Error||Make sure the name, Net ID and password match the BYU account used to sign the form (must be the BYU Net ID and password).|
|Parent seeing “Not Authorized to View Component” Error||
Make sure that you have completed the student portion of the form.
Make sure that the parent is using their BYU Net ID and password, and not logging in with different log in credentials.
|“ID number does not have an account” Error||Make sure that you are using your Net ID and not the actual ID number. Your Net ID has both letters and numbers while your ID number is all numbers.|
The majority of errors will appear as pop-ups throughout the form, and will explain how they can be resolved. If you run into an error that you have tried to solve, but cannot, you can send a YMessage to Financial Aid.
