Winter Pilot Program FAQs

This program is designed to help you succeed academically, experience the blessings of living and learning in a spiritual environment, build your character, and help you recognize how your education and current skills give you opportunities to build and serve. We would love to have you join us and bring all that you have to offer our community. We believe you will be benefited personally and grow in your capacity to impact those around you for good.
  • We are accepting 192 students into our pilot program. To participate, you must let us know that you are interested by completing this form. We will accept students into the program on a first-come, first-served basis. Once you are notified that you have been accepted into the pilot program, you will need to pay your non-refundable deposit as quickly as possible and no later than October 3, 2022. Those who do not pay their deposit by that date will be removed from the program and we will invite students on the waitlist to participate.

  • In addition to the expectations we have of all students, if you are selected to participate in this program, you will need to earn a 3.0 or higher semester GPA during Winter 2023. If you are not able to meet these requirements, you would be able to apply to BYU for a future semester or term.

  • Yes. Participants in the pilot program will be required to take the following three classes as an “envelope” or group of classes:

    • WRTG 150: Writing & Rhetoric (3.0 credits)
    • University seminar (3.0 credits)
  • Yes. You can take up to a total of 18 credits, although we recommend that you take between 12 and 15 credits. Keep in mind all of your classes will be considered when we evaluate your semester GPA.

  • You may register for classes in addition to those required as part of the pilot. You will be able to register for classes at the same time as other freshmen who were admitted for winter 2023.

  • If you haven’t already done so, we recommend that you complete the FAFSA to determine if you are eligible for federal aid, including Pell Grants and subsidized student loans. If you are eligible for a Pell Grant, be aware that you would need to take at least 12 credits during winter 2023 in order to qualify for the full grant.

Participants in this pilot may be eligible for the Cougar Pell Promise. Please review the Cougar Pell Promise program and initial qualification requirements here.

In addition to federal aid and the Cougar Pell Promise, you may be eligible for non-university scholarships winter 2023. We invite you to search for non-university scholarships here.

  • Students admitted to this pilot program will be required to live in either BYU On-Campus Housing or BYU Off-Campus Contracted Housing. You will be able to sign up for housing at the same time that all students admitted for winter 2023 will be invited to sign up. We recommend that you review our housing policies here.
