Chelsey Clay

Enrollment Services Counselor

I was born and raised in Kennewick, Washington. I earned a bachelors degree in Horticulture from BYU and a masters degree in Academic Advising from Kansas State University. In addition to working with BYU’s fabulous current and prospective students, I enjoy cheering for my favorite college football teams, exploring US national parks, sewing, running, and spending time with my family.

I believe that individuals are endowed with a diversity of gifts and talents which are discovered and expressed through creative, learning, and development processes and gain significance as the individual increases their gifts and talents to serve others in meaningful way. The years which students attend the university are often accompanied by intense intellectual, social, emotional, and spiritual development. As an advisor, I am an important component of the developmental support structure. I am influenced by theories and approaches that focus on assisting students to thrive. I believe that students are most likely to thrive when an advising relationship focuses on shared responsibility and emphasizes that the student matters as a member of the campus community. I provide scaffolding, support, and guidance to students, which allows students to choose how to thrive at BYU. I support thriving by living the institution’s values, explaining the rationale for policies and curriculum, and by encouraging, empowering, and challenging students to reach their potential.
