BYU Course Repeat Policy

Key Changes Effective Winter 2026

Courses can be taken up to three times, regardless of when the attempt occurred.
- For example, if you have attempted a class three times before Winter 2026, a fourth attempt in Winter 2026 or later is not allowed (see example 4).
- Official withdrawals (W grades), Independent Study, and Challenge Exam courses also count toward this limit.
When you repeat a course, only the most recent attempt will count toward your GPA.
- Attempts beginning Winter 2026 will be labeled "RPT" (Repeated) and will not count toward your GPA (see example 2). Remember the most recent grade is the one that is calculated in your GPA.
- The way grades were used in the GPA before Winter 2026 will not change (see example 3).

Additional Rules & Exceptions

R-suffix courses (e.g., Music 160R) are excluded from this policy.
- All attempts count toward your GPA.
Courses from other universities
- BYU honors grades as reported by the transfer school.
- Transfer course grades do not count toward your BYU GPA.
Audited courses
- These do not count as attempts and do not impact your GPA.
To count as a repeat, the course must have equal or more credit hours than the original attempt.
