Parent Refusal for FAFSA
Parent Refusal for FAFSA (Apply for a Direct Unsubsidized Loan Only)
If you are a dependent student whose parent refuses to provide their information on your FAFSA, you may be able to receive a Federal Direct Unsubsidized Loan only. Students in this situation cannot receive a Federal Pell Grant or a Federal Direct Subsidized Loan.
Provide a letter from your parent which includes:
- Date the parent stopped providing financial support, and
- Statement which explains the parent will not provide financial support in the future, OR that they refuse to complete the parent section of the FAFSA.
If you cannot get a letter from a parent, documentation from a third party describing your relationship with your parents is required (e.g., teacher, counselor, bishop, or court).
You must complete the student sections of the FAFSA. The maximum unsubsidized loan amount you can receive is:
- Freshman - $5500
- Sophomore - $6500
- Junior/Senior - $7500
Note: If approved, the decision does not carry over from year to year.
Please note: If the parent refusal question was marked incorrectly on the FAFSA, or if you want to be considered for Pell Grants or subsidized loans, you will need to correct the question (shown above).
