Verification
If the government or BYU selects your file for verification, you must complete the process in order to be eligible for federal aid (Pell Grants, Subsidized and Unsubsidized Loans).
How Will I Know if I'm Selected?
To help you through the verification process, a task will be posted to your My Aid Dashboard and My Financial Center, which includes specific instructions on what you need to do. In addition, watch for an email requesting clarifying information.
Submitting Documents
You may submit copies of the documents using one of the following options:
- Upload them directly into Financial Aid Student Forms
- In person to the Enrollment Services Office (3326 WSC), or
- Mail signed copies to Enrollment Services at 132N ECNB - 701 East University Parkway, Provo, UT 84602.
Dependent Verification
If you are a dependent student and are selected for verification, both you and a parent must complete and sign the electronic verification form. After submitting the required documents and signing the verification form, you will be directed to send a request to your parent to sign it as well, along with instructions on completing the process.
Deadlines for Processing
Documentation must be processed within 120 days of your last day of attendance in the school year (fall through summer), or by September 1, whichever comes first. Submit your documents via Student Forms as soon as possible, as processing can take a few days to a few weeks, depending on the time of year.
If you are selected for verification after initial awarding, verification still must be completed. Aid is adjusted based on the outcome of verification. Failure to complete the verification process by the deadline will result in the reversal of any awarded Pell Grant and federal loans.
Examples
- Example 1: You submit a FAFSA in late November and end up not attending winter semester or spring/summer term. You have 120 days from the end of fall semester (or date of withdrawal, if earlier) to submit documentation and be awarded a Pell Grant for fall semester.
- Example 2: You submit a FAFSA on the June 30 deadline for the year and are awarded a Pell Grant. The Financial Aid Office notices a discrepancy a few weeks later and selects your file for verification. You have until September 1 to submit and successfully process the documentation, or the Pell Grant will be canceled.
What is a Verification Document?
Verification documents include, but are not limited to:
- electronic verification form
- any tax returns (transcripts or forms)
- W-2s and signed statements
- any clarification of verification form or tax information requested through Student Forms/by an employee.
The majority of verification documentation is requested through a task on My Financial Center/MyAid Dashboard.
