Scholarship Petitions

Exceptions to scholarship policy are sometimes granted based on individual needs. Extenuating circumstances must be present.

BYU scholarship policy requires that you be enrolled in at least 12 credit hours per major semester. Exceptions to this policy are made based on extenuating circumstances such as serious illness, injury, or disability; death or serious illness in one’s own immediate family; and extensive family responsibilities such as those faced by a single parent with dependent children are considered. Exceptions are not made because of marriage, difficulty of curriculum, employment, or graduate school tests.

If your situation is regarding a medical condition please submit a petition by doing the following:

  • Send an e-mail to sch-petitions@byu.edu.
  • Include your name and student ID number in the subject line.
  • Describe your circumstances and make a specific, clear request.
  • A statement from your doctor verifying that your medical condition necessitates an exception to policy. We will also accept verification from the University Accessibility Center (UAC).

If your situation concerns something other than a medical condition, please contact Enrollment Services to make an appointment with an Enrollment Services Counselor.
