WHILE YOU'RE AWAY
Modify Deferment Details
If you need to begin classes a different semester, revisit your deferment form and change the semester you plan to attend. If you return earlier than anticipated, update your release date and select the semester you plan to attend from the available options.
Apply for Scholarships
If you're a continuing student (completed at least 12 credits of regular BYU coursework) and attended BYU before your mission, you'll automatically be considered for an academic scholarship for the semester you return as long as you completed your BYU Mission Deferment form. To be considered for a financial need-based scholarship as you return, you must complete the FAFSA by January 20 prior to the academic year you're returning. It's not necessary to complete the BYU Scholarship Application, unless you want to be considered for additional scholarships.
Check Your BYU Email
As a BYU student, you automatically have a BYU-provided email address. Your BYU email address starts with your NetID (netid@byu.edu). All BYU communication will come to you through this email address, so it is important that you check it regularly for timely reminders, updates, and other information. You can access this account by going to outlook.byu.edu and using your netid@byu.edu and BYU password to log in.
WITHIN NINE MONTHS OF RETURNING TO BYU
Agree & Re-Commit to the Honor Code
You must re-commit to the Honor Code as you return from your mission. As a BYU student, you should seek to be honest in your dealings with others. You should complete and be evaluated on your own work. You should avoid academic dishonesty and misconduct in all its forms, including but not limited to plagiarism, fabrication or falsification, cheating, and other academic misconduct.
Renew Your Ecclesiastical Endorsement
You must receive a new Ecclesiastical Endorsement when returning from your mission. If you're currently serving, your mission president will complete the endorsement. If you're home, your bishop and a member of the stake presidency will complete it. BYU must receive your endorsement before to registration. You will not be able to add classes to your registration cart until the endorsement is complete and the deferment holds have been removed. To start your endorsement, visit endorse.byu.edu and select the BYU student on mission deferment endorsement option.
Enroll in Duo Two-Step Verification
You may have enrolled in Duo Two-Step Verification before you left on your mission. However, Duo was removed from your account so you could access important information while you were serving. You will need to set up Duo Two-Step Verification again as you prepare to return to school. Enrolling in Duo will help keep your online account safe.
Register for Classes
Use MyMAP (BYU’s registration system) to help you organize and register for classes. You'll get a priority registration date which is an assigned date that determines when you can register. Go to the Register tab on MyMAP to see your assigned date. Tools to help you decide which classes to take include the University Catalog, the Class Schedule, the University Core (GE) requirements, and your academic advisor.
New Required University Course
We want you to succeed at BYU. To help you navigate higher education, BYU developed a class designed specifically with you in mind. All new admits (including first-semester returned missionaries) must enroll in UNIV 101 - First-Year Foundations for Student Success, during your first semester/term to avoid a registration hold.
Take a Language Challenge Exam
If you served a foreign-speaking mission, you may want to take a Language Challenge Exam. These exams can give you up to 16 credits and may fulfill some university requirements. Many language departments require registration in a specific course in order to take the challenge exam. Contact the appropriate department before requesting to challenge language credit.
Find Housing
Finding a place to live near campus is important. For your first two semesters at BYU, all single undergraduate students must live (1) in BYU On-Campus Housing, (2) in BYU Off-Campus Contracted Housing, or (3) with qualifying family members. You are eligible but not required to live on-campus or in BYU off-campus contracted housing once you have completed two semesters at BYU. There are on-campus housing communities for students who are 19 or older, and some on-campus housing options may require students to have a meal plan. Meal plans may make it easier for you by saving time and/or money.
On-Campus Jobs
Working on campus has lots of benefits. You can gain real-life experiences, qualify for tax-breaks, and work close to your classes. Before your first day of work, make an appointment to have your I-9 processed and provide the required documents.
Update Your Personal Info
When you return from your mission, update your phone number, mailing address, and email in your personal information. BYU will use these to send you important information, so you'll want it to be up to date.
Pay for School
Tuition is due 7 days before the first day of class. If you do not pay tuition by this date, a hold will be placed on your account. Your classes will likely be dropped if you do not pay tuition by the Add/Drop Deadline of the semester/term. If you're interested in applying for Federal Financial Aid (loans and pell grants), you'll need to submit the FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid).
Obtain a Tuberculosis (TB) Test
If your mission was outside of the U.S. or Canada for 6 months or more, Utah state law requires you to have a tuberculosis skin test. You must complete it by the first day of classes, or a TB hold will be placed on your account. If you're an international student, you must comply or your student visa status may be terminated. Contact the Student Health Center to make an appointment.
Enroll In or Waive Student Health Plan
Students enrolled 3/4 time or more (9-semester credits/4.5-term credits) must have health insurance coverage year-round. You're automatically enrolled in BYU’s Student Health Plan 1 week before classes start if private insurance has not been reported. You'll have access to waive the plan about 1 month before classes start. This is a yearly process and the deadline to waive the BYU Student Health Plan is the semester Add/Drop Deadline.

BYU ID Card
Your BYU ID card is your official university identification and used for many things on campus. Use it to access Cougar Cash, meal plans, athletic facilities, library services, and other campus services. It's also used to get free rides with UTA. Make sure to submit a photo for your ID card at least 1 month before classes start.
