International Background

Any applicant that has lived outside the United States may have additional requirements in their BYU application. Find out which of the following may apply to you!

English Proficiency

We want all admitted students to be successful at BYU. A strong command of American-style academic English is key to that success.

You will see an English proficiency section on your application if an exam score is required. Visit our English Proficiency Requirement page to learn more about:

  • Accepted English proficiency tests
  • Minimum score requirements
  • Instructions for submitting scores
  • Eligibility for English waivers
  • English learning resources

Evaluating International Schoolwork (non-U.S.-accredited)

All high school or college work completed outside of the United States at a non-U.S.-accredited school must be professionally evaluated. This includes international schoolwork that is included on a U.S. transcript as transfer work.

Visit our Evaluating International Work page to learn about this process and to access BYU-approved evaluation applications.

TIP: Start early! This process can take several weeks (or even months).
