Reverse Transfer

Close to completing your general education (GE) requirements? Complete GE requirements with BYU credit.

What Is Reverse Transfer?

Reverse transfer is a way for students to earn general education (GE) completion or an associate degree from a previous college after transferring to BYU—even if those requirements weren't finished before coming to BYU.

This option is helpful for students who are close to completing their GE or associate degree and are now earning credits toward a bachelor's degree at BYU.

Associate degrees or GE completion are awarded by the previous college, not BYU, but the completed degree or GE certification can impact a student's remaining GE requirements at BYU.

How Does It Work?

  1. Transfer to BYU
  2. Contact your previous college's transfer counselor.
  3. Confirm which BYU courses meet their GE or associate degree requirements.
  4. Once requirements are met, the previous college awards a GE completion statement or an associate degree on the official transcript.
  5. The updated transcript is sent to BYU.

Next Steps

  1. Contact a transfer counselor/advisor at your previous college(s) to ask whether your BYU courses can be applied toward their associate degree or GE requirements.
  2. After you meet their requirements, request an updated transcript from your previous college that shows:
    1. The awarded associate degree or a statement of GE completion
  3. Submit the updated transcript to BYU, with the associate degree or a statement of GE completion on it.
  4. Once the associate degree or GE completion appears on your BYU record, review your remaining GE requirements in MyMAP.
  5. Meet with your BYU academic advisor for your major to plan upcoming courses and registration.

Why This Matters

Completing reverse transfer can help ensure your previous coursework is fully recognized and may reduce remaining GE requirements—making your academic path at BYU clearer and more efficient.
