Register for Classes

Learn more about how and when to register for classes.

When to Register (Priority Registration)

The table below lists priority registration dates. You are responsible for being aware of all other registration dates and deadlines.

Spring and Summer Priority Registration

All students have the same priority registration date for spring and summer: March 1.

Fall and Winter Priority Registration

Your assigned priority registration date is determined by the number of credit hours earned through the most recently completed semester/term.

  • Transfer students: includes transfer credits accepted by BYU.
  • New freshmen in your first semester: You're assigned the last date of priority registration. This includes returned missionaries who did not attend before their mission.

If you have AP credit or other transfer work but have not yet attended BYU, you will still be assigned the last registration date. For your second semester, all completed/accepted credit hours will be considered when your date is assigned. The dates are assigned and posted to MyMAP a few weeks before registration begins, and an email notice is sent.

Priority Registration Dates

Priority registration begins at 12 a.m. on your date. All future dates are subject to change.

Choosing Your Courses

  • Browse the Catalog: Find the classes you want to take by browsing the catalog for major requirements and course offerings.
  • Use the Class Schedule: Find classes using helpful filters, such as time of day or instructor.
  • Review the University Core (GE) Requirements: Make sure you understand and plan for your General Education requirements.
  • Meet with an Academic Advisor: If you are an undecided major, get help planning your courses.
  • Plan and Register on MyMAP: Go to MyMAP to plan your schedule and officially register.

Most classes are available for online registration in MyMAP at any time through the Add/Drop deadline. Some courses require a permission-to-add code, indicated by a note in the class information.

NOTE: Starting winter 2024, UNIV 101: First-Year Foundations for Student Success will be required of all incoming first-year students (including first-semester returned missionaries).

Before Priority Registration – Cart

The registration cart is an optional feature in MyMAP that helps you plan. Visit the Registration Cart page for more information on how to use it.

Adding Classes

On MyMAP, you can search for classes by selecting the blue "+ Add course" button on the right side of the page; you can search for the class directly or browse through available class options.

Find and select the course you would like to add in order to view specific sections offered for that semester, along with the number of available spots in each section. To add a specific section, choose the "Select" button, then "Add." You will also use these same steps to add a class to your registration cart (if it is prior to your priority registration date) or add yourself to the waitlist (if the section is full and offers a waitlist option). For a more thorough explanation of these processes, visit the MyMAP page.

To redeem a permission-to-add code, select the correct section, click "Use Add Code," enter the code in the provided field, and select "Add."
