Permission-to-Add Codes

What are they and how do they work?

What is a Permission-to-Add Code?

Permission-to-Add Codes (PTACs) allow you to register for a class that is either full, has a limitation that you don’t meet, or needs special authorization. These codes are valid for the specific class, section, and year-term. They only work once and expire after the add/drop deadline. It is up to the discretion of the instructor or the department to give PTACs; they may choose not to.

Things PTACs Cannot Override

  • Registration Eligibility Rules
  • Add/Drop Deadlines
  • Sex-specific Course Sections
  • Maximum Credit Hour Limits (without advisement center approval)
  • Holds which prevent registration
  • Note that Permission-to-Add Codes do NOT work on class envelopes.

How to Use a PTAC

If you want to add a class and need a permission-to-add code, use one of the following options:

Code from Your Instructor
Use the BYU App
  1. Contact the instructor/department to get a permission-to-add code.
  2. Log into MyMAP and click the "Register" tab.
  3. Click the “Add a Class” button under the correct semester/term.
  4. In the pop-up, select the year/term, teaching area, and class number of the class you want to add.
  5. In the left column, click “+P” for the class you want to add.
  6. A pop-up box will appear. Enter the permission-to-add code (they are not case sensitive) and hit “Enter.”
  7. Select “OK” to confirm the transaction.
Some instructors may grant permission using the BYU app. When an instructor does this, no code is generated; it simply gives a specific student permission to add that course. When an instructor grants permission using their mobile device:
  1. The instructor has already given you permission using the BYU app.
  2. Log into MyMAP and click the "Register" tab.
  3. Click the “Add a Class” button under the correct semester/term.
  4. A pop-up will appear with the class you’ve been given permission to add. You must click on the “A” to add the class.
  5. Select “OK” to confirm the transaction.

*If no pop-up appears, you can add the class directly from the "Register" tab. At the top of the page, you will see a note. Select "Click here" to find and add the class you were granted access to.

Permission-to-Waitlist Codes

Professors may opt to grant students a permission-to-waitlist code rather than a permission-to-add code. These codes work the same way as permission-to-add codes. However, rather than adding the student directly to the class roll, they allow the student to be added to the course waitlist. This gives the student the opportunity to be added to the class if enough spots open up. Because waitlists expire on the fourth day of class, permission-to-waitlist codes will become invalid on this date as well. (See Waitlists page for more information on how waitlists work).

Rather than being made up entirely of randomly generated numbers and letters, permission-to-waitlist codes will begin with “WLIST” (e.g., WLIST-12345-ABCDE).

Permission-to-Audit Codes

Permission Codes are also used by students who are auditing courses. For more information on auditing courses, please see the “Auditing Classes” section the Registration Policies page.
